New study confirms your older sibling is the smarter child

New study confirms your older sibling is the smarter childNew study confirms your older sibling is the smarter childThe University of Edinburgh recently conducted a study that explores the reasoning behind why the older siblings in larger families consistency end up receiving higher education and better-paying jobs.Researchers studied 5,000 children from pre-birth to the age of 14. Every two years, the children where tested. On balance, the older children evidenced higher IQ scores in the fields of letter matching, reading and on picture vocabulary tests by the age of one. The study concluded that a shift in parenting methods to be the most obvious factor behind the birth order effect. Our results suggest that broad shifts in parental behavior are a plausible explanation for the observed birth order differences in education and labor market outcomes, said author Dr. Ana Nuevo-Chiquero.It makes sense that young parents would be the most nervous about messing up the first one. Though no notable disparity was found in emotional support, the panic of getting it wrong the first go-round sees them providing much more intellectual support reading with the young child, learning instruments together with them, and various other brain-boosting activities. The most sinister of the reasons why your older sibling is able to existentially dunk on you so effortlessly every Thanksgiving comes down to risks. The study also found that mothers were much more likely to drink and smoke while pregnant with child 2 and beyond.

Vacation Time and Pay for Employees

Vacation Time and Pay for EmployeesVacation Time and Pay for EmployeesHow much vacation time do employees get? The answer is that it depends on the company or organization youre employed by. There isnt a set amount, because employers are leid required to providevacation leaveeither with pay or unpaid. Some employers give vacation time to only full-time employees. Others grant vacation time to all employees. Still, others offer pro-rated vacation, depending on your work schedule and employment status. Who Gets Vacation Pay Federal law does not provide for vacation pay. TheFair Labor Standards Act(FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick time, or holidays. Therefore, employees are not legally entitled to paid vacation time or paid holidays off from work. Vacation pay is based upon an agreement between an employer and an employee, either acollective bargaining agreement, company policy, or employment contract. The agreement or company policy will de termine howmuch vacation payyou will get if you are entitled to receive it. Company Vacation Policies The amount of vacation time any employee receives is determined by company policy, collective bargainingagreements, or even, especially in small companies, an informal agreement between an employee and management. There are some rules that apply, however. When employers do offer vacation, it has to be offered equitably. So, companies cant discriminate based on race, gender, religion, or other protected characteristics when giving time off from work. Average Amount of Paid Vacation Days According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 73 percentof workers in private industry are provided with paid vacation days.More than three-quarters of workers in sales and office jobs (80 percent), production, transportation, and material moving jobs (80 percent), natural resources, construction, and maintenance jobs (79 percent), and management, professional, and related jobs (76 percent ) had access to paid vacation time. Just over half of workers in service occupations (55 percent) had access to paid vacation leave. Vacation time earned by employees varies by the length of time that they have worked with their employer. TheBLSreports Workers with one year of experience average 11 days of paid vacation.Employees with five years of experience average 15 days of vacation.Workers with 10 and 20 years of tenure average 17 and 20 days respectively. The 2017 Paid Leave in the Workplace survey from the International Foundation of Employee Benefits reports thatPaid Time Off (PTO) plans, which would include days off that can be used for a variety of reasons, offer salaried employees 17 days after one year of service, 22 days after five years, 25 days after ten years, and 28 days after 20 years of employment. The survey reports that salary employees receive an average of 12 days of vacation after one year of service, 16 days after five years, 19 days after tenyears, and 23 d ays after 20 years of employment. The United States lagged behind many other countries in the developed world both in the average vacation time accrued and in the number of vacation days workers actually took according to a survey conducted byExpedia.European countries, Japan, India, Australia, and New Zealand generally averaged 20 - 30 days of paid vacation, while the overall average for the United States was 15 days. Paid Time Off(PTO) Many employers now lump together vacation time with personal days and sick time to provide a total number of days of paid time off (PTO) from work. This bank of time typically does not include federal holidays which, depending on the employers holiday policy, would be additional days off from work. Employees who experience significant or repeated illnesses or family emergencies requiring time away from work may end up with less (or no) vacation time during those years. On the other hand, healthy workers with no personal issues may be able to tak e more vacation time. ProjectManager.coms 2018 Paid Time Off Study white paper reports that the average PTO reported by surveyed U.S. employees is three weeks. 27 percent of employees have one week or less, or none at all. 3.4 percent of surveyed workers have unlimited paid time off. Government workers have the highest accrued time off, averaging 4.2 weeks. Managers earned 19% more PTO than regular employees. Accrued Vacation Time Company policy determines how employees earnvacation time. Some companies providePTOthat accrues on a monthly basis or is based on a certain number of hours worked. For example, employees may receive one day per month or 8 hours of leave that they can take off for any reason. Other companies provide vacation based on years of service. In this case, the employee could be provided with a week for every year of service, up to a maximum number of weeks. If vacation is based on years of service, the employee is usually eligible to take it after they have wo rked for a year. Again, the amount earned depends on company policy or the terms of a collective bargaining agreement for covered workers. Pay for Unused Vacation Time Depending on company policy, employees may be required to use their vacation during a specific time period, which is known as use it or lose it, or they may be able to carry unused vacation or PTO over to future years. If the company does allow vacation to be accrued there may be limits to how much time can be carried over, and there may be a deadline for using the carried over vacation days. Recent surveys indicate that employees are struggling to use their allotted vacation time. Given the demands of their jobs, almost half of workers reported that they didnt take the time to which they were entitled. How to Check Your Vacation Status When a company is offering you a job, they should let you know how much vacation you are entitled to and when you can start taking it. If you havent been informed, check with t he Human Resources department or with the person who offered you the job. That way, you will know up front what time you will be able to take off from work. If youre already working, check with Human Resources (the information may also be available on the company website) for clarification of your vacation status. Tips for Negotiating Vacation If the company doesnt offer vacation time, you may be able to negotiate with your employer to take a certain number of days off. This would most likely be unpaid time off from work. In addition, if you do receive paid vacation, you may be able to negotiate extra time off, on an unpaid basis, if your employer is flexible. There are no guarantees, of course, but sometimes it cant hurt to put in a request if you are a well-respected employee. Experienced workers who are being recruited might be able tonegotiate additional vacation timeto equal the amount of vacation offered by their current employer (instead of accepting the amount of vacatio n traditionally awarded to new hires at their target firm). Laws Regulating Vacation There are no federal laws regulating vacation, however, depending on the state in which you reside, vacation is considered compensation, and employees must be allowed to accrue vacation or be paidfor unused vacation time.

March Madness causes the average employee 6 hours of lost productivity

March Madness causes the average employee 6 hours of lost productivity March Madness causes the average employee 6 hours of lost productivity True college basketball fans know that  March Madness is almost upon us, and while estimates suggest companies could lose a maximum of $2.1 billion  in “lost wages” during the tournament,  newer findings from OfficeTeam show how much time is lost. The average employee “spends six hours on sports-related activities” during the course of the event, which lasts 15 workdays, or 25.5 minutes per day.Independent research firms surveyed more than 1,000 U.S. office workers and more than 300 senior managers. Here are some of the findings that stood out.Opinions split on sports in the officeWhile the research found that 46% of employees reported enjoying “sports events like March Madness” in the office (being able to pay attention to what’s going on, and having fun with colleagues), but 33% of say they’re “on the sidelines” (not having a huge interest in sports, but still being fine with what’s going on at work), and 21% reported not being fans and that they’d rather ke ep their attention on work. The managers surveyed said that during major sporting events, 59% said sports comes up more in conversation, 55% report seeing “sports-themed office or workspace decorations,” and 48% have seen workers sporting “team jerseys or other fan attire.”Brandi Britton, a district president for OfficeTeam, commented on why that might not be a bad thing:“While employers may worry about events like March Madness being a distraction in the office, allowing workers to enjoy sports-related activities for even a few minutes can be time well spent. Staff will appreciate the opportunity to bond with colleagues and return to their desks rejuvenated … Companies should trust employees to manage their time. Good workers still get their projects done, even if they take occasional breaks.”The older you are, the less time you follow The MadnessOfficeTeam’s results also included an age  and gender breakdown, showing that the older the employee, the less likely they are to  get involved in March Madness. Workers ages 18 to 34 spend the most amount of time on “sports-related activities” during the tourney, more than any other age group during this time. Women were also less likely to take part and weren’t as likely as men to support sporting events like March Madness.

Are You Overthinking Things in Your Job Search

Are You Overthinking Things in Your Job Search Are You Overthinking Things in Your Job Search If you think about it, there are so many components to a job search. Resumes. Cover letters. Job descriptions. Interviews. Negotiations. It can definitely be easy to overthink each step of the job search process in order to ensure that you’re doing everything correctly. Problem is, this overthinking things can slow down your search- or worse, bring it to a grinding halt. If you’re facing some serious overanalyzing, here are some things you might be overthinking in your job search and how to overcome them. Heres how you may be overthinking things in your job search: You’re overthinking the job postings. Job postings can be intimidating. Sometimes they are written in a very formal, unfriendly manner, listing all the qualifications you’ll need in order to be considered for the position. Just reading them can make your eyes glaze over and have you thinking (or in this case, overthinking) that you’re not qualified. But don’t be afraid to  apply for a job that you could be a fit for. No employer expects you to have every single qualification listed in the description. There is always going to be a learning curve when it comes to a new job, so don’t assume that you need to check off every item on the employer’s wishlist before applying. You’re overthinking your writing skills. You’re not Hemingway, and you’re convinced that your subpar writing skills have kept you from getting hired. Chances are your writing skills are just fine. You don’t have to craft every single sentence perfectly (although iffy grammar and a typo-laden cover letter are definitely frowned upon by employers). If you’re unsure of your writing skills, have a friend or family member read it over for accuracy and clarity. If you think that your cover letter is the culprit in your job search, it could be that you’re not tailoring it specifically to each job that you’re applying for. You’re overthinking your interviewing skills. Sure, you can whip up a great cover letter and resume, but when it comes to one-on-one interviews? Well, you freeze up. Everyone gets nervous when it comes to interviews, especially if it’s for a job that you really, really want. But having a “this person can change my entire life if he hires me for the job” mentality can make you a mess come interview time. Switch your mindset instead to seeing your interview as more of a conversation where you’ll discuss your skills, experience, and education as it relates to the job. Removing the pressure will make you less stressed and more confident. You’re overthinking your employment gaps. Whether you took some time off to travel the world or to stay at home to care for your children, you might have some employment gaps on your resume. That’s OK;  life happens. But if you become so self-conscious about not having a perfectly streamlined resume with one job flowing right into the next, then you might inadvertently reflect those fears in your cover letter, or worse, your job interview. There are ways to cover up employment gaps, such as by redesigning your resume to have a more functional format, or use a skills-based resume that focuses less on chronological order and more on what you can bring to the table as a job candidate. You’re overthinking past job search problems. Your job application got tossed by the applicant tracking system. You botched a third-round job interview by forgetting your potential employer’s name. You couldn’t get your Skype to work for a video interview. These past job search problems can plague you, but only if you let them. Instead of focusing on past faux pas (we all have them), learn from them. You now know how to beat the applicant tracking system, you learned to write down the name of the person interviewing you in case you forget, and you figured out all your tech issues ahead of time before a potential video interview. View each mistake as a lesson learned, and move on. You’re overthinking the ability to find a flexible job. Everyone tells you how hard it is to find a job these days. But when you tell them that you’re looking for a flexible job that will allow you to work from home, you might be met with even more negativity. Without getting positive reinforcement from friends and family members, you might suffer some serious overthinking  as it relates to your job search, and even ditch the idea of looking for flexible work. But as we can attest, the number of legitimate flexible jobs continues to rise. In fact, 80 percent of all employers now offer some sort of flexible job options. So determine what level of workplace flexibility you need (i.e., full-time or part-time telecommuting, part-time jobs, compressed workweek, freelance or contract jobs) and then look within your field to find those flexible jobs. We guarantee that they are out there. It’s easy to get overwhelmed during your job search and suffer from some serious overanalyzing. But instead of overthinking your search- and not doing anything to correct it- focus instead on what you can offer to a potential employer, forgive yourself for past errors, and move forward in your search, confident that you can (and will) find a flexible job that meets both your professional and personal needs. Readers, do you get stuck overthinking things during your job search? What are the triggers that trip you up? Let us know in the comments below!

Use Your Morning Commute to Get Energized for the Day

Use Your Morning Commute to Get Energized for the Day Use Your Morning Commute to Get Energized for the Day How to Use Your Morning Commute to Get Energized for the Workday Take advantage of your morning commute. For many of us, as soon as the morning alarm goes off, our thoughts turn to work and our upcoming commute. Whether you're getting in a car or climbing aboard a bus, a rigid daily routine like this can often lead to your arriving at work in a daze, not really knowing how you got there. While you can't eliminate your morning commute (aside from moving next to your workplace), you can put that time to good use. Let your morning commute energize and motivate you to tackle the day to come. These tips will help you transform from a sluggish-before-10 a.m. sleepwalker into a morning go-getter who's ready to seize the day! 1. Check in with colleagues To really get into the business frame of mind from the very start of the day, consider making some calls while on your way to work. This might not work with every type of commute, but if you have a quiet walk or drive to your workplace, it might be worth touching base with your team just before you get in. If your commute doesn't require your full attention (e.g. riding the bus or subway), use the time to begin sorting through your inbox on your smartphone. Even if you don't get through every email, you will at least have some advance notice of what the day has in store. The benefits of these things are twofold. For one, you will feel more on-the-ball when you walk in the door. On top of that, having your business head on early in the morning will help you shake off your mundane commute and put the time to good use. 2. Get active Exercising in the morning gets your endorphins flowing, giving your mindset a welcome breakfast boost. Combining your commute with exercise can help you optimize the time you spend journeying to and from work, and there are plenty of options out there. You could cycle, walk, run (or even swim to work if you're Munich commuter Benjamin David!) the benefits are all similar. Just make sure you're well-prepared by utilizing an on-site shower and packing a change of clothes. Taking an active approach to your commute is also proven to help you lose weight and reduce stress, and it will even help you gain a new perspective on your home city. Sounds like an invigorating start to your day of work. Related:12 Things Successful People Do Each Morning 3. Supercharge your breakfast It's true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but if you're a charge-out-the-door type, you might tend to overlook this essential meal. As the first meal of your working day, breakfast gives you the vitamins and nutrients you need to take you through a long or tricky morning. Taking extra time the night before to pack some on-the-go breakfast foods will help you start your day off right without having to spend your precious morning minutes in the kitchen. Superfoods such as blueberries and chia seeds, for example, offer numerous nutritional benefits, from the blueberries' potassium and Vitamin C to the chia seeds' high antioxidant quotient. Of course, your tastes will dictate what you like in the morning, but since you're already taking this proactive breakfast step, you may as well try to keep it healthy. 4. Exercise your mind You can use your commute to energize your body, but what about your mind? After all, sharpening yourself up for the workday can be done without having to jump into your inbox or onto a bike. Giving your brain a quick workout in the morning has become popular, with many people lauding the benefits of logic puzzles when worked into their daily routine. Smartphones allow you to take this brain training on the go, and your morning commute is a great opportunity to get to work. There are plenty of programs out there that will help you hone your cognitive skills for the day ahead. Lumosity offers a bevy of fun and challenging brain-twisting games, while similar apps Peak and Elevate offer their own exciting takes on the genre. Ultimately, your morning commute can be whatever you want it to be. Of course you can continue to sleep through it, but why not take advantage of this travel time to help you start off your day with energy and mindfulness? Whether it's a relaxing time to slowly prepare yourself for the day's work, or a workout to get the endorphins pumping, just make sure you adopt a fresh attitude to your morning's journey and you'll be surprised by the benefits! 3 Ways to Get a Response to Your Job Application

3 Ways to Get a Response to Your Job Application 3 Ways to Get a Response to Your Job Application As a leading career and coaching service and provider of resume writing, cover letter help, interview prep, and LinkedIn help, ResumeSpice understands what employers are looking for in job applications.Imagine…you found a job you’d be a perfect match for, you made sure your resume was polished and updated, and you applied for the job. But your phone isn’t ringing and you’re starting to wonder if your application was lost in the ether or if you accidentally typed your phone number incorrectly. If you can relate, you’re in the same situation as a lot of other professionals looking for work. While you can’t make recruiters call you, there are a few things you can do to market yourself to potential employers.Clean up your social media actWe’re not just talking about LinkedIn. We’re talking about every social media profile you have. Facebook. Twitter. Snapchat. Instagram. When employers receive your application, the first thing they do is look at your resume. If you have al l the right skills, the next step many will take is conduct an online search. Before an interview is even granted, you’re being evaluated solely by what information is available about you online. It’s okay to go out with friends and it’s completely normal to experience hardships. Just don’t overshare on social media. A harmless photo at a friend’s house party, may not be viewed as such by a potential employer without context. If you have any doubts about whether or not something would be off-putting to potential employers, play it safe and don’t post. Keywords are the keyYou can get a major sense of what’s important to a company and to the role being advertised simply by looking at the job description.Pick out keywords that seem to be important to the role and pepper your resume with them where they make sense. For example, if the role calls for someone with creative writing experience, you definitely want to use the words “creative writing” in your resume. Just be c areful not overuse the keywords to the point of not sounding natural.Follow directionsI know that you love quick-apply features offered by LinkedIn and Indeed.com. They’re excellent. But a big “however” is about to follow. If the job description includes information within it about how to apply, you need to follow directions if you want a response.  Even though that quick apply feature is staring you in the face, you’ll want to apply by the method the employer instructs. For example, if a prospective employer requests that to be considered, you must submit an application to a specific email address, along with your resume, cover letter, and work samples, clicking “quick apply” and not following directions will not position your candidacy favorably.Bringing it togetherMaybe you want to change careers. Maybe you’ve been out of work for a while. Whatever your situation is, make sure you’re maximizing your potential to be noticed â€" in the right ways â€" by sticking to t hese simple, yet important suggestions.Want to get noticed by hiring managers? If you would like personal career coaching services, reach out to ResumeSpice. Video games how playing them can help you succeed at work

Video games how playing them can help you succeed at work Video games how playing them can help you succeed at work Playing video games can seem like the opposite  of working. What do imaginary worlds where you beat levels, complete quests, and slay dragons  have to do with the real grind of our day-to-day jobs?In fact, video games are great strategic training: in requiring us to think about how we can rise to the next level, they offer important lessons in choosing and advancing our careers.Ladders spoke to Steve Kamb, the founder of Nerd Fitness  and the author of Level Up Your Life about how video games can help us get ahead at work.Ladders: What can video games teach us about success?Kamb: Success is not just money in your bank account. It means that you’re working on something that you’re excited about and that shows you’re making progress. In a video game, every time you pick up a controller or hop into a game world, you are trying to advance to the next level or you’re fighting a slightly more challenging boss. You get really addicted to the process of making progress. It’s called the progress principle. The same is true when it comes to your career. Are you working on something that is challenging to you and that you’re excited about? Can you find a way to create a system that shows that you’re advancing? Why is the act of leveling up so powerful? If you don’t have a particular goal that you’re working toward, it’s very easy to become complacent and get stuck.Far too many people end up looking back years later and saying: “What happened? It seems like just yesterday that I had these ideas to do and try things.”In any video game, there is always a very specific thing that you’re working toward. It might be to defeat a  bad guy, or reach the end of a certain level in a certain amount of time, or save the world from a zombie apocalypse. You know exactly what you need to do to win.But you don’t just start the game and all of a sudden beat it. There are a series of tiny steps between you and that end goal. You always know what you’re working towa rd next. When it comes to your career, your personal finance, your fitness, you have to create those levels for yourself. If you’re looking for a new job, it might be that every day you have to apply to at least one new job. Or every day you’re going to set aside X amount of dollars to eventually quit your job and start something new.You have to have a specific goal and put levels in place as mile markers to show that you’re moving in the right direction. It can be easy to get immersed in video games. How can we find that in our jobs? In a video game, if it’s something that you enjoy and you are seeing progress, it’s easy to lose track of time. Three hours can fly by in no time.At work, three hours can sometimes feel like two and a half days. There’s a concept called “flow,” which is the idea that you can get lost in an activity. Just like in a video game, when you’re at work and you can show that you’re making decisive specific progress on a project, it becomes a lo t easier to get immersed in it.It comes down to the type of projects that you’re picking. It should be something that you are interested in and that you can show you are learning or making improvements. The more you can identify things in your work life that allow you to get lost in them, the more likely you are to become successful  because you are working on things that bring you to life. How important is a sense of beating an adversary? I don’t want to equate an evil bad guy with your evil boss. The bad guy is the part of you that says, “this is good enough,” or the part that makes an excuse as to why you haven’t gotten a promotion or why your work isn’t getting done on time. Each of us has  an internal boss battle that, regardless of how successful we  are, we  have to face. It’s also fun to create a dragon to slay. For some people, that might mean slaying a debt dragon. Say they’re $20,000 in credit card debt. Every day at work is no longer just going to their job. I t’s about building up artillery (aka money) that they can then use to defeat the debt dragon. In addition, you could imagine that an organization is working behind the scenes to hold you down. It helps to put a face on negative thoughts.I use that as an angry motivation. That group, whoever they may be, is trying to keep me down. I’m going to fight against it. I’m going to dig deep and get more resilient and put levels and systems in place so I can systematically prove that bad guy wrong. So can we justify taking video-game work breaks during the day? I think so - if you do it right. When I was at a job that I disliked, and I was out of shape and didn’t like my social life, I used video games as my escape. Other people might binge-watch Netflix shows or escape into a series of books. These are ways to not address the problems in our lives. These days, my life is in a much better place. I’ve built a company, and I work with coworkers that I’m excited about on projects I’m excited about. Now when I play video games, it’s not because I’m trying to escape my regular life. I use them for entertainment.Throughout the day, if someone needs to take a quick break and reward themselves with five minutes of playing Candy Crush or scrolling through Instagram after having a really successful, focused 25 minutes or an hour of getting work done, that’s great. The problems come when you’re spending five minutes every 20 minutes to play Candy Crush or you incessantly check your phone because you’re bored and disengaged at work. That’s a sign to show you that you’re not interested in what you’re doing and should start searching for something new. When you find a job where you’re engaged and lose track of time, you won’t even have time to play video games.

Dental Assistant Skills Overview

Dental Assistant Skills Overview Dental Assistant Skills Overview Dental assistants are an important part of a dental practice and perform a variety of tasks, from assisting directly in patient care to office work. Dental assistants differ from dental hygienists in that the latter do much more unsupervised work with patients. What Kind of Skills Do You Need to Be a Dental Assistant? Some states require that dental assistants obtain certification, usually through two- or three-semester-long training programs. Other states do not require certification, and dental assistants may train on the job. Some dental assistants go on to receive further training, to become dental hygienists, or even dentists, but it is possible to spend a career as an assistant. Job prospects are generally strong, and pay can be good. Top Skills Dental Assistants Need Assistants sometimes perform polishing or explain proper dental hygiene to patients, but most of their patient contact occurs working beside the dentist during procedures that require an extra pair of hands. Dental assistants also prep examination areas, clean up after procedures, sterilize equipment, and order supplies. Administrative Skills Dental assistants may have a great deal of office work. Tasks include interviewing patients and conducting intake, scheduling appointments, creating and maintaining records, and ordering supplies. This aspect of the job is similar to other office staff positions and ?requires most of the same skills, such as attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication, and basic computer skills. Advanced IT skills can help, as can the ability to speak multiple languages.  Unlike other office workers, dental assistants need at least a basic understanding of dental medicine to understand the content of documents and forms and familiarity with dental software such as  Eaglesoft or  Dentrix. Technical Skills Although dental assistants seldom work with patients unsupervised, they still must be knowledgeable about dental medicine, to be able to anticipate the sequence of tasks in complex dental procedures. Dental assistants also must be able to take X-rays, blood pressure readings, and dental impressions, prepare dental materials, maintain equipment, and disinfect rooms and tools. All of these tasks require attention to detail, the ability to follow strict protocols, critical thinking skills, and good judgment. All dental assistants must also be able to recognize the signs of a dental emergency and are legally required to have current CPR certification. Physical Abilities While being a dental assistant is not known as a physically demanding job, it does require the stamina to remain on task for hours at a time and the strength to help move disabled patients into and out of the examination chair. Excellent hand-eye coordination is required, which means not only good (or well-corrected) vision, but also excellent fine-motor control in both hands. A dental assistant may not be color-blind, because fine differences in color can be important clinical signs.
